M.A.C. – May/June Roundup 2023

Middlesbrough Angling Club – May Roundup. Club news, points of interest & information for members discussed at our May meeting (held Mon 29th May 2023):

  • Following positive feedback as reported in last months roundup, the club has received confirmation of funding to the tune of £7,500 towards the ongoing improvement work at Hutton Rudby Ponds from the Angling Improvement Fund (AIF) which is administered by the Angling Trust on behalf of the Environment Agency who provide the funding through rod licence sales to benefit anglers. Full credit from the committee (and I’m sure from all members of the club) to Steve Watkins for his hard work researching and putting the application together.
  • Fish Welfare – As the weather warms up and the fish begin spawning, Fisheries Officers may: rope off pegs / close a venue / cancel matches at short notice as necessary – this will be communicated via MAC Facebook & website – Also a reminder to members that NO fish AT ANY TIME should be placed on the ground without an unhooking mat and fish should never be carried (for catch shot etc) unless in a sling or suitable landing net.
  • Membership Card Checks – Officers of the club will be increasing membership card checks across our waters – Please don’t be offended if you are asked to produce your card.
  • Hutton Rudby Ponds – After a very wet month the decision was made to postpone major works due to start at the ponds on 22nd May to ensure no unnecessary damage would be caused by the heavy machinery to the soft banking and the neighbouring land of farmers and homeowners who are providing access to the ponds. The work has been rescheduled for the week commencing Monday 19th June – no monday match on this date & the ponds and grounds will be closed to members until the work is completed. • Also rescheduled … To coincide with the work being done at Hutton Rudby the club is hosting a social evening to be held on Tuesday 20th June with guest speaker Andrew Ellis, of AE Fisheries & an experienced angler – giving members a chance to learn more about the work – past and present – AE have done at the ponds – from 7PM @ St Francis Social Club, 200 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough TS5 4PS.
  • Thanks and appreciation from the committee for the enthusiasm of the work group who have been assisting the Fisheries Officer with ongoing general maintanance at the ponds.
  • The match record for Pond 1 at Hutton Rudby was recently broken by Martin Metcalfe with a terrific catch of carp and a single tench for a weight of 113lb : 03oz from peg 21.

  • Ron Thompson Memorial Trophy – After two days of intense but good spirited competition on Hutton Rudby Ponds & Marske Reservoir, David Atkins was presented with Ron’s trophy after a day 1 weight of 35lb:06oz at Marske and 84lb:08oz from Hutton on day 2 for a new competition winning record weight of 119lb:14oz. 2nd place went to Anth Smith 99lb:07oz and third overall was Ron’s son, Scott Johnson with 89lb:08oz – Well done all – Another memorable weekend of fishing in memory of a great man. • Membership – The club is not currently taking any further applications for membership due to the the number of people we have on the waiting list – If this changes during the current year it will be communicated via the club website & Facebook group.
  • Open Meeting Rescheduled – Due to family commitments the open committee meeting scheduled for June has now been moved back to 7PM, July 24th at St. Francis Parish Hall & Social Club, 200 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS3 4PS. All club members are welcome to attend – Following enquiries about the clubs stretches of the River Swale, MAC Chairman Jeff Herbert, also the driving force behind the River Swale Preservation Society will give an insiders guide to fishing (and accessing / parking)! the clubs waters at Gatenby, Maunby, Holme, Ainderby & Skipton Bridge.
  • And Finally… Rumours that the Hutton Rudby fisheries officer has ordered himself a gold plated sit-on lawn mower are completely unfounded! …Keep the catch reports and catch pictures coming on the clubs private members Facebook group.

Tight Lines! M.A.C. Committee.
