M.A.C. – August/September Roundup 2023

Middlesbrough Angling Club – August Roundup. Club news, notices, points of interest & information for members discussed at our August meeting (held Mon 28th August 2023). Apologies for the delay in posting – Had a load on!

  • M.A.C. JUNIOR COACHING – The club recently held two free to attend junior coaching events at our Hutton Rudby Ponds – in partnership and with funding from the Angling Trust Get Fishing campaign as part of National Fishing Month – The sun shone and the youngsters found plenty of bites – all catching silver fish and carp – providing a positive first angling experience for the youngsters – who were in most cases catching their fist fish! The sessions were well attended and feedback has been great… The smiles on the kids (and adults) faces says it all really.

  • Following these events details and pictures have been used by the Angling Trust, Get Fishing and the Environment Agency social media teams both regionally and nationally to promote angling and its benefits – A further positive for the club to take away from our efforts to re-establish regular junior events.
  • Thanks go once again to Dave Munt from the Angling Trust and to all involved – The clubs aim in the longer term is to use the experience and resources available to establish our own junior angling coaching pathway and continuing to work with the Angling Trust and their Get Fishing Campaign to increase inclusive participation opportunities – The dates of future junior events will be communicated via the website/facebook group.
  • MARSKE RESERVOIR AUTUMN CHAMPS – Members are reminded that the Marske Reservoir Autumn Champs competition takes place this Sunday (24th September) The reservoir grounds and car park will be closed to non-participants from midnight on Saturday – 5PM after the match. We have a full house for Sundays match and due to the limited car parking space members wishing to fish after the match are kindly asked not to arrive before 5PM.
  • MIDDLE TEES – GIRSBY & THE ASHES – Thanks to the ongoing efforts of our Chairman and Rivers Officer, Jeff Herbert, working with land and riparian owners, the club has acquired the fishing rights to a further stretch of the middle Tees at Girsby and members can now access and fish The Ashes, upstream of the clubs water at Low Dinsdale – Promising more excellent river angling opportunities for members on these areas of the river that have not been fished for many years.
  • THE ASHES – Access is via a gated road off Neasham Hill – PLEASE NOTE – this gate is locked between the hours of 7PM & 7AM no members to be on the land during these times. Members can park at the end of the track past The Ashes Lodge at the end of the track. Please be considerate to the landowner and guests of the lodge when arriving and leaving. • GIRSBY BRIDGE – Parking is opposite Church House Farm and members must leave their club cards on display. Access to the river is down the track to Girsby Bridge past All Saints Churchyard – As before, please be considerate to the farmer and local residents when arriving and leaving. • MIDDLE TEES OPEN MATCH – Jeff has organised an open match to take place on Sunday 8th October on the clubs water at Low Dinsdale and the new stretch of river at The Ashes – These stretches will be closed to pleasure anglers on this date. Anglers wishing to fish the match or for any further information on The Ashes / Girsby Bridge sections are welcome to contact Dale at Anglers Choice (01642) 899288
  • Following several reports of ‘unsanitary behaviour’ at Hutton Rudby ponds members are reminded that when ‘answering the call of nature’ they do so with respect for their surroundings and fellow members – Any individual found to be ‘conducting themselves inappropriately’ will face expulsion from the club
  • This Mondays Committee Meeting (25th Sept) is an open meeting – Club members are welcome to attend from 7PM at St. Francis Parish Hall & Social Club, 200 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS3 4PS.
  • SIGNAL CRAY FISH – Mentioned in the last roundup but worth mentioning again – Following reports from members about signal crayfish, an invasive species, at Hutton Rudby Ponds and what they should do if they catch one – From the Inland Waterways Association website: ‘Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), it is an offence to release, or allow to escape, any non-native species into the wild in the UK except under licence. If you catch a signal crayfish, bring it ashore for humane destruction’. Read more here – https://waterways.org.uk/about-us/news/signal-crayfish
  • Keep the catch reports and catch pictures coming on the M.A.C. Private members Facebook group – Please use an unhooking mat and suitable sling / landing net.

Tight Lines! M.A.C. Committee.
